TWO FOREIGN LANGUAGES TO BE LEARNED FROM THE FIRST GRADE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL

Belgrade – In the opinion of Mladen Sarcevic, the Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, all children in Serbia should learn two foreign languages equally.

BelgradeIn the opinion of Mladen Sarcevic, the Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development, all children in Serbia should learn two foreign languages equally.

"In order to introduce such a change, we need to significantly change the student’s timetable. Now, the first foreign language is taught from the first grade and the second foreign language from the fifth grade. If first-graders learnt two foreign languages, it would mean more school classes, and would require an amendment to the law. Children now have more classes than it is prescribed by the law. We need to define the working week in order to accurately determine what burdens students and what relaxes them, "Minister Sarcevic said at the “Mihailo Petrovic Alas" elementary school in Belgrade.

A lower level of knowledge is required from students in Serbia at the end of school than from their peers in France, Germany or Russia. While their peers from abroad are expected to reach the B1 level in the first foreign language, our students are expected to reach the A2 level. This is the result of an analysis that the Association for Foreign Languages and Literature conducted last year for the needs of the Ministry of Education.
