PROF. ZORAN STANKOVIC, PhD, GRANTED AN INTERVIEW TO THE KURIR DAILY

Belgrade – It is difficult to say how exactly the corona kills, or what exactly it does in the body, because the decision of the World Health Organization (WHO) is not to perform autopsy of the deceased if the cause of death is the coronavirus, but to do special tests.

According to the WHO decision, the autopsies of the deceased are not being carried out in Serbia either, as Zlatibor Loncar, the Health Minister, said.

Prof. Zoran Stankovic, PhD, a former Minister of Health, says that he knows of the WHO decision to burn the bodies of the dead, but that it will not be possible to give a more detailed assessment of what the virus does in the body of a healthy and chronically ill person without an autopsy.

"What our Chinese colleagues, who did 12 autopsies of the deceased in Wuhan, have found out so far is that the lungs of the infected persons are full of slimy mucus. That is why the flow of oxygen was almost impossible in the bodies of those individuals. And when the body does not get enough oxygen, then all the organs, such as the brain, the heart and others, cease to function, those experts explained,” Prof. Stankovic said.

Therefore, he adds, a team should be formed that would still do autopsies, because this is the only way to obtain the necessary information for all other experts, who are now working on making a vaccine or treating patients.

“For example, in patients with diabetes, cardiovascular and other chronic patients whose immunity is already impaired, when the lungs are damaged in that manner, then the most severe disease outcomes occur, since other organs cannot function if the lungs collapse, "Prof. Stankovic said.

According to him, it is necessary to form a team of people who will perform autopsies for the purpose of studying the behavior of the virus in the body.

“They should also be done on people who have not had any chronic illnesses to see what the virus does to the body, whether it causes changes in the lungs or other organs, and what those other organs are. It is the only way. Everything else is a story based on lab testing. Autopsies were risky all the time. Medicine requires action, not waiting,” Prof. Stankovic said.
