POSSIBLE INCREASED VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN

The Women against Violence Network warns that in the context of increased isolation and limited movements of the population, such as the state of emergency, increased violence against women and children is possible.

The Women against Violence Network warns that in the context of increased isolation and limited movements of the population, such as the state of emergency, increased violence against women and children is possible.

With the full understanding that, at these times, the resources of society are focused on and used to fight against the further spread of the COVID-19 virus, we urge state authorities and institutions, above all service providers, such as centers for social work, the police, health care institutions and the judiciary, to provide timely and appropriate support and protection to women and children with the experience of domestic violence.

In particular, we ask that you bear in mind the extremely difficult and delicate position in which, due to the declaration of a state of emergency, vulnerable categories of women, such as those living in rural areas and in remote settlements, Roma women, women with disabilities, refugees and displaced women, as well as those over 65 years of age, found themselves in. As most of the so-called (unpaid) jobs in Serbia are still performed by women, members of the aforementioned categories of population are exposed to making specific efforts to implement hygiene and other measures of protection for themselves and their families, which in the conditions in which they live, is not easy and further contributes to their vulnerability.

We appeal to the media not to attribute and justify cases of domestic violence to increased nervousness, anxiety or fear, regardless of how real and present they are now.

During the state of emergency, members of the Women against Violence Network will continue to receive calls and support female citizens through helplines. Information on the availability of helpline support for women with the experience of violence is available on the following link: https://www.zeneprotivnasilja.net/vesti/1031-radno-vreme-i-kontakti-organizacija-mzpn-tokom-izmenjenih-uslova-rada-usled-corona-virusa

We would like to send an appeal to all those who have just experienced violence or fear that they may experience it to dial the nearest helpline number in their city or vicinity.
