Presevo – Despite the constant appeals that money amounts higher than 10,000 euros should be declared when entering our country, passengers, for some reasons known only to them, do not do so and thus risk being left without large sums of money.
Over the past two days alone, customs officers discovered several such cases at the Presevo border crossing and seized over 100,000 undeclared euros, the Customs Administration stated.
On Friday, June 19, 2020, a "Mercedes Benz" with Belgian license plates was singled out for a detailed control on the exit side of Presevo, which was driven by a 64-year-old Belgian citizen of Turkish origin.
He said that he had nothing to declare except his personal luggage, which turned out to be incorrect, because the customs officers then found 57,000 euros in the car's engine, air conditioning filter and in the drawer between the driver's and co-passenger seats, of which the allowed amount was returned to the passenger, while the competent court would decide about the remaining portion of the amount.
The day before, a similar situation happened at the same border crossing, except that a Turkish married couple was traveling in a "Mercedes Benz" car with German license plates.
They also denied that they had anything to declare, but the customs officers then found 44,000 undeclared euros in the handrail on the back seat of the car, of which 20,000 euros were immediately returned to the spouses, while the rest was temporarily detained.
