“YOUTH MALE AND FEMALE LEADERS” SUMMER CAMP HELD ON MT. AVALA

Bujanovac, Vranje, Leskovac – A summer camp called "Youth Male and Female Leaders”, which was organized by the  Center E8 association from Belgrade, was held on Mt. Avala  from July 24 to 30.

The camp’s program, which was focused on promoting non-violence and gender equality, brought together 28 young people from 12 towns in Serbia, who include young people from Bujanovac, Vranje and Leksovac.

The male and female participants in the camp had the opportunity to gain new knowledge and skills about the importance of inter-ethnic and inter-religious dialogue, the promotion of democratic values ​​and community development based on human rights, with an emphasis on women's rights. The program included the following topics: leadership, interaction and communication, activism and presentation skills.

Prior to the additional education obtained at the camp, the boys and girls from primary and secondary schools already completed the basic training and became members of the “Be a Man” clubs.

Data from the "Research on Gender-Based Violence in Schools in Serbia", which was conducted in 50 schools on a sample of nearly 25,000 respondents, showed that 69 percent of pupils from primary schools and 74 percent of secondary school students experienced at least one form of violence.

The research was conducted by the Center for Gender Studies and Policy of the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade, the UNICEF, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and other contributors to the project.

"Be a Man" is a project that has been implemented by Centre E8 in Serbia since 2008, and so far over 3,000 youths have been trained on violence prevention, the importance of education on violence prevention in one’s environment, healthy lifestyles and gender equality. Girls have been included in the implementation of the program since last year.
