Bujanovac – Apart from the major problems caused to the residents of the suburban areas in Bujanovac, several days’ long heavy rains undermined the work of the Red Cross Branch Office in the municipality. A large amount of water from the adjacent yard of the “Branko Radicevic” elementary school penetrated into the warehouses and jeopardized the goods kept there.
“The point at issue includes the goods meant for the most socially vulnerable part inhabitants of the municipality. 140,000 meals, which are planned for the next five months, are now at stake. As the water penetrated into the warehouses, the 100 tons of flour, sugar, salt and other food items necessary for preparing meals, for which the government had earmarked 9.7 million dinars, are now jeopardized. There is a danger of all that being wasted. Almost all the workers are engaged in preventing further penetration of the water into the warehouses, "said Bratislav Lazarevic, the Secretary of the Red Cross Branch Office in Bujanovac.
He also said that the arrival of a truck carrying soil, which would be used to solve the problem in the school yard, was expected. If they fail, the 1,200 soup kitchen beneficiaries will be left without meals.
"This is a very difficult moment for all of us. We are doing everything in our power to overcome the problem, which we are faced with, as painlessly as possible. We hope that we will be able to cope with the woes at least until the spring, when the problem in the school yard, where the cause of everything lies, will definitely be fixed. Also, a session of the municipal Center for Emergency Situations was held. We made an attempt to solve the problem by means of mechanical devises, but, because of inaccessibility of the ground, the attempt was unsuccessful. We expect that the municipality will provide financial assistance to us, since we don’t have any funds, while the intervention costs from 100,000 to 120,000 dinars,” Mr. Lazarevic said.
