Presevo, Bujanovac, Medvedja – Thanks to the support of the Swiss Government and the European Union, thirty-four local self-governments in the southeast and southwest of Serbia made important steps in the field of good governance for the purpose of becoming better organized and governed, more equal and transparent and with a greater participation and involvement of citizens in the local communities.
That was said at the "Good Governance at the Local Level" event, which was organized by the European Progress development program.
Ursula Laubli, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Serbia, said that the development of a country largely depended on how it was governed.
“Over the past 15 years, we significantly contributed to the transfer of our skills, knowledge and experience in the manner that suited the local context, and when local self-governments apply these principles in their daily work, then the citizens live better and have improved public services, " Ms. Laubli said.
Thus, 22 municipalities established the institutional framework or, more precisely, formed expert Centers for Good Governance, while 27 representatives of the local authorities were trained to implement the five principles of good governance in practice and hence became an ongoing resource for future sustainable development.
