On the occasion of the seizure of textbooks in the village of Rajince, which is situated in the municipality of Presevo, and bearing in mind the mode of conveying this bit of news by some media, the Coordination Body for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja states the following:.
"We are obviously dealing with the attempt of manipulation and communication of this bit of news in a way to confuse the public and justify the illegal behavior and conduct," said Zoran Stankovic, President of the Coordination Body for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja. „It is true," Mr. Stankovic said, that "someone was trying to smuggle more than 6, 000 textbooks in the Albanian language and distribute them to the children from the first to the fourth grade, and it is also true that the books were seized for violation of the law and because they had no supporting documentation.
"The competent governmental bodies did their job in accordance with the law and they didn't inflict any" torture", as it was conveyed by some media. It is true that the police and economic crime inspectors from Presevo and Vranje conducted an investigation, which was ordered by the Deputy Public Prosecutor, who launched the procedure of establishing the facts related to the illegal entry of books into the country. It was established on the spot that there was no supporting documentation for the books or the names of the persons who had brought the books. Also, the inspectors didn't, in any way, deal with the content of the textbooks," said Mr. Stankovic.
He explained that there was a legal procedure under which it was allowed to legally import and use textbooks in minority languages , based on the proposal of the Albanian National Council and following the verification and approval by the Ministry of Education. Thus, so far, the Ministry of Education approved 88 textbooks and workbooks in the Albanian language for primary school children in Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja.
"We informed the OSCE and the international community of the event in the village of Rajnice and of the seizure of the textbooks. I have said many times and I will say again that the Constitution and the laws of this country, as well as the international conventions on national minorities, must be respected. They are the same for all the citizens of Serbia, as well as for the Albanian minority, "said Mr. Stankovic.
