At the end of February 2010, Minister Milan Markovic, President of the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, submitted to all citizens of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja a report on the Coordination Body’s activities in the previous year. The report, which was in the form of a letter in Serbian, Albanian and Romany, was sent to the addresses of all citizens of these three municipalities.
Stating major successes achieved in 2009, Minister Markovic mentioned the rejoining of the Coordination Body by representatives of the Albanian community, the opening of extended departments of the Nis University’s Faculties of Economics and Law in Medvedja, which was done with the support of the Ministry of Education, USAID and OSCE, as well as over 300,000,000 dianrs invested in infrastructure projects for the purpose of strengthening the economy of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja.
Underscored in the letter is the following: „For the first time since its establishment, the Coordination Body, last year, provided the funds for youth projects, civil society and the most vulnerable categories of citizens. We invested over 18 million dinars for those purposes. In 2009, the Coordination Body donated schoolbags with the necessary school equipment to all first-grade students in Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja. We also awarded scholarships to 152 secondary-school students, out of whom 58 were from Presevo, 55 from Bujanovac and 39 from Medvedja. The scholars visited Belgrade, where they met with the Serbian President Boris Tadic and the Serbian Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, and where they paid a visit to the Belgrade City Hall. At a reception at the Palace of Serbia, which was held in their honor, the scholars received gifts from “Srpska banka” and “Telekom”. Under the auspices of the Coordination Body, the children were able to enjoy the “Adventures of Peter Pan” and “Peca and the Wolf” plays in Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja, while a group of 14 Serbian, Albanian and Roma secondary-school students produced the “You and I are We” play on growing up in South Serbia, for which they wrote the text of the play and which they staged in their own languages”.
Speaking of the Coordination Body’s activities, Minister Markovic singled out in the letter the project “Strengthening the Capacities for Inclusive Local Development in South Serbia,” the project “Promotion of Peace Maintenance in South Serbia” and the “Days of Ombudsman” in South Serbia, during which it was said that the very first Office of the Protector of Citizens outside Belgrade would be opened in these municipalities.
This is the second time that President of the Coordination Body addressed his letter directly to each and every citizen of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja. Upon appointment as President of the Coordination Body, Minister Milan Markovic, in September 2008, also sent a letter to the citizens to inform them of the Coordination Body’s goals and plans.
