Medvedja – The Miners' Day is observed in the municipality of Medvedja in memory of August 6, 1903, when a strike over poor financial and working conditions of miners began in the Senj mine, which is the first and the oldest coal-pit in the country. The strikers, then, fought and won   a better position for them and a reduction in working hours. The trade unions of miners are still struggling to improve safety and health at work because the miners work is done in very difficult and dangerous conditions.

Nebojsa Arsic, the Mayor of Medvedja, visited the "Lece" mine in Medvedja and congratulated the holiday to all the miners. While talking with Ljiljana Jovanovic, the bankruptcy manager of the "Lece" mine, and Dusko Gagic, the director, he said that it was important to ensure good working conditions for the miners, as well as safety at work, so that they could return to their homes and families safe and sound.

The miners organized themselves this year, too, and observed their holiday in a modest manner by having a tournament in mini football on the sports ground next to the kindergarten.
