„We expect more finacial assistance from the Republic of Serbia, because we are unable to resolve all the issues by ourselves“, said Slobodan Draskovic, President of the Municipality of Medvedja.
Over the past few years, one could hear encouriging news on the stable political situation and good interethnic relations coming from this poor part of the Jablanica district. However, at the same time, utterly unfavorable information about economic  conditions in the region is disseminated.

Although the goverment, with the assistance of a great number of donors, invested  in the development of Medvedja more over the  past ten years than it was invested in it during the previous fifty years, the statistical records show that this region is still among the least developed ones in the country.
Not a single socially-owned company is operational in the region, the people are out of work, while around 300 persons are employed at seven privately-owned companies and 140 privately-owned shops. When it comes to economic development, out of 113 municipalities in Serbia, Medvedja holds  the 110th. place.

The national income per capita is around 27 per cent of the republican average, while the income is as much as 75 per cent lower than the republican one.

Medvedja is a region populated by 10,000 people. Besides the central part of the municipality, there are 44 settlements, which are mostly situated in the mountainous region, which is very difficult to access in winter months.

Even though it is estimated  that the conditions in Medvedja are stable, migrations from this region are a daily occurence. The Serbs and Montenegrins migrate to Leskovac, Nis and Belgrade, while the Albanians go to Kosovo and Metohija, where they manage to find work.
