Bujanovac, Presevo – After almost two months upon being declared an infected area because of the lumpy skin disease, livestock transport in the municipalities of Bujanovac and Presevo was approved. Livestock markets are still non-operational, although herders can now buy and sell cattle. Thus, the largest cattle market in Pcinj district, which is situated in the village of Ristovac near Bujanovac, is still closed.
The Stojkovic family from the village of Ljiljance near Bujanovac is still visiting their stable, which was, two months ago, emptied by the lumpy skin disease, which killed their eight cows. Leposava Stojkovic says that they received the compensation from the state but haven’t yet invested the money in the purchase of new cows. Both they and their neighbors waited for the abolishment of the ban on the transport of livestock, which was in force in Pcinj district from the beginning of June, when the infection emerged.
Miodrag Milkovic, the Director of the Veterinary Station in Bujanovac, said that under the decision of the Veterinary Directorate, people were allowed to buy and sell cattle, while the veterinary station issued the papers for buying and selling cattle.
“We'll try, together with them, to find the animals that are of adequate quality to those they had, "said Mr. Milkovic.
8,300 cattle were vaccinated in Bujanovac and Presevo. 28 days passed from the vaccination and the cattle acquired immunity to nodular dermatitis. 43 heads of cattle were euthanized in these municipalities, mostly in Ljiljance, where the disease first appeared.
As it is expected by the Veterinary Station in Bujanovac, the livestock markets will begin operating at the end of the month.
