The agreement on the method of recognizing university diplomas was reached in November 2011, as part of the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, with the mediation of the European Union. The procedure envisages that the European Association of Universities in Brussels certify the diplomas issued by the accredited university educational institutions in Kosovo and Metohija, so that they could be recognized in Serbia for the purpose of further education and/ or employment.
The offices of the NGO "Spark" in Pristina and Belgrade work as partners in the process of verification of university diplomas. Spark provides support to the applicants and forwards all the envisaged documents to the European Association of Universities.
Graduates of the accredited university education institutions in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija, who want to have their university diplomas recognized for the purpose of continuing their education or searching for a job, may contact the offices of Spark in Pristina and Belgrade to launch the procedure. The recognition process applies to former students who have completed graduate (BA, BSc) and master (MA, MSc) studies at the accredited faculties.
Upon submitting the documentation, three to five months are necessary for the European Association of Universities to issue a certificate, which is necessary in the process of recognition of university diplomas. All certificates for the previous three cycles were issued to the applicants.
According to the information provided by Spark, a total of 386 requests for the process of recognition of university diplomas had been submitted, out of which 370 were filed in Pristina and 16 in Belgrade. Of the total number of applications, 282 university diplomas received the certificate of the European Association of Universities, out of which 274 university diplomas were from the university education institutions in Kosovo and Metohija.
Pursuant to the Regulation on the Particular Mode of Recognizing University Education Qualifications and Evaluating the Academic Programs of the Universities in the Territory of Kosovo and Metohija that Don’t Perform their Activities in Accordance with the Regulations of the Republic of Serbia, so far, a total of six requests (University of Nis, International University of Novi Pazar) were submitted to the universities in Serbia, out of which three were resolved with a positive outcome, and three requests are in the process of solving.
All students who have received diplomas from the universities in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija may initiate the procedure for the recognition of their university education qualifications.
