FOLK ENSEMBLE

Medvedja – The folk ensemble "Razigrano kolo – Vez" from Medvedja was founded on May 5, 2018.

Medvedja – The folk ensemble "Razigrano kolo – Vez" from Medvedja was founded on May 5, 2018. The ensemble has 120 active members, who are from 5 to 20 years of age, while the founder and the Head of the ensemble, Bojana Lakusic, said that the idea of the ensemble had come from the love for folklore, folk costumes, dancing and socializing with children.

“We are active throughout the year. We have rehearsals twice a week, while Marko Zivic, the folk dancing manager from Nis, comes regularly to us. He works with four groups of children for an hour per group. In addition to Serbia, we also perform abroad and at various events and festivals, "said the Head of the folk ensemble.

Folk dances are important for both the people and ethnic groups, because every nation or ethnic group has its own characteristics in folk dances and costumes, especially in a municipality like Medvedja, which is multiethnic, so that is why Bojana came up with the idea to organize the first big multiethnic dance "Let's Dance Together" in the large hall of the Cultural Center in Medvedja in December last year, under the auspices of the Coordination Body of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja.

“We implemented two projects last year. One of them was approved by the Ministry of Culture, while the other one was approved by the Coordination Body. The latter project was very important to us, because it was multiethnic in character. We worked together with the Albanians, while the project was called" Dancing Together "and the event was very well attended," says the Head of the "Vez" association.

This folk ensemble organizes all its concerts on its own, while the only source of income are the projects that the Ministry of Culture approves, since they do not get any funds from the local self-government’s budget.

"We took over the folk costumes from “Vez”, which existed earlier, and then I did a project and bought more folk costumes. We write projects and that's how we manage and that is our only source of funds. A lot of children are interested and like to dance and travel ", says Bojana and adds that their performances outside Medvedja are financed by the children’s parents.

The children pay a minimum membership fee, while she finds the financial means to pay the choreographer. She adds that although that is not enough, her love for this tradition gives her the strength to continue to fight.

“We are currently having admission days for new members of the ensemble and have already been contacted by the interested children, since the interest never diminishes.  Our project was approved by the relevant ministry this year as well, so that we are planning a concert in December provided everything goes well with the epidemiological situation, and we are all looking forward to it ", says Bojana Lakusic.
