DEMINING IN BUJANOVAC AREA RESUMED

Bujanovac – Deminers started spring works in the area of Sulceviska mahala in Ravno Bucje, in the far north of the municipality of Bujanovac, which is the site  suspected of being contaminated with residual ordnance.

Bujanovac – Deminers started spring works in the area of Sulceviska mahala in Ravno Bucje, in the far north of the municipality of Bujanovac, which is the site  suspected of being contaminated with residual ordnance.

"The site is 4 to 5 kilometers away from Uski potok  in Breznicki Muhadzir, where, last year, the first phase of the project was completed over an area of 275,800 square meters, and where three anti-personnel mines and a hand grenade were found," said Ali Aslani, the Head of Staff for Emergency Situations of the municipality of Bujanovac.

According to the Mine Action Center of the Republic of Serbia, which is the organization responsible for the project and work supervisor, technical survey will be carried out over an area of 113,600 m2.

The works will be performed by the Belgrade-based company "Saturnia" doo, while the subcontractor is going to be the "Stop Mines" company from Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Upon the implementation of the project, it will be possible to either confirm or reject the suspicion that the area is contaminated with mines and other unexploded ordnance.  This will help increase the safety of the local population, and will provide conditions for the safe exploitation of forests, cattle grazing and mushroom picking, which are the main sources of income of the local population, "the Center for Demining said.

The implementation of the project of technical survey in the Bujanovac municipality is financed by the Government of the Republic of Serbia, with the funds allocated for humanitarian demining, which were, through the ITF- Enhancing Human Security, enlarged by the US Government’s funds.
