Bujanovac – Despite several initiatives and announcements of the local self-government, Bujanovac is still one of the few cities in the country that does not have any video surveillance cameras in the square and along the main street.
“I have been repeating the same story and sending requests to the Municipality of Bujanovac for 18 years. There is no way to realize the video surveillance project, which is not expensive at all, and yet is of great importance for the safety of the population," says Nedzat Behluli, a businessman and media worker from Bujanovac.
One of the biggest advocates of setting up cameras is the councilor in the current and several previous convocations of the local parliament, Miodrag Milkovic, the Director of the Veterinary Station Bujanovac.
Mr. Milkovic submitted an official proposal to the Bujanovac Assembly in 2017, explaining it by the need to increase the safety of the citizens, and almost a year later, the local self-government said that it had no money for those purposes.
The change of attitude was hinted at after the vandalism in the town square in January 2019, when unknown rioters damaged the lamps and New Year's lighting in the square.
The then Head of the Mayor's Office, Rahim Salihi, said after the incident that the local self-government was seriously considering installing video surveillance in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Now it is up to Mr. Arifi's administration to solve this problem.
