HUNGARIANS PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO ALBANIAN NATIONAL COUNCIL

In addition to the talks on funding, the last week’s visit of Svetozar Ciplic, Minister for Human and Minority Rights, to the Hungarian National Council, led to an agreement on providing assistance to the Albanian National Council. Minister Ciplic and Tamas Korhec, President of the Hungarian National Council, agreed that representatives of the Hungarians should provide assistance to the Albanians from South Serbia with the aim of “putting” the newly established Council “on its feet” as smoothly as possible. Tamas Korhec said for “Dnevnik” that Minister Ciplic had launched the initiative.

„This is the first time ever that the Albanian community showed interest in getting involved in the system of protecting the rights of ethnic minorities in Serbia. In that respect, seven years after the establishment of other national councils, the initiative aimed at the Albanian community outside Kosovo to elect its own national council was developed.  They held the election and constituted the Council. Since the Hungarian National Council has the greatest working experience in Serbia, we decided to share it with the Albanians”, Mr. Korhec said.

According to him, they are going to share with the Albanians their knowledge of the operation of the new composition of the Hungarian Council, as well as their past experiences. “The meeting of Presidents of the National Councils should be held in Belgrade next month. We should, thereupon, familiarize them with our documentation, our manners of communicating with the institutions, as well as with our cooperation with local self-governments, ministries and other institutions”, Mr. Korhec said.

He added that he was willing to help since the constitution of the Albanian National Council might have a positive influence on the stability of inter-ethnic relations in Serbia, as well as on the strengthening of the position of Serbia in Europe. He says that they have only had talks on the phone with their Albanian counterparts so far, but that the real work awaits them following the meeting at the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights.

Galip Beciri, the recently elected President of the Albanian National Council, is sure that the offered assistance is necessary. He confirmed that there had already been some contacts and added that he looked forward to a meeting at which he could learn more about the way in which the Hungarian National Council operates.

„We established the National Council and appointed its members. We expect that our friends from the Hungarian National Council would clarify all the issues that are vague to us now,” Mr. Beciri said.  As he pointed out, the assistance of their Hungarian colleagues would mean a lot to the Albanian ethnic minority in South Serbia, especially the one in the field of financing. Mr. Beciri said that he would pay a visit to Subotica prior to the official meeting scheduled for September.
