The Coordination Body’s Office, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, is doing a study by which the possible ways of improving the quality of teaching Serbian as a second language in elementary schools in Bujanovac and Presevo, where classes are held in Albanian, will be identified.

The first step in that direction involved a tour of 13 primary schools in the two municipalities and the collection of data necessary for developing the best modality of learning the language. In each school,  students of the fourth and the eighth grades did a test for determining the knowledge of Serbian that they had acquired. The students of the fourth, eighth and other senior grades filled out  the questionnaires, which, among other things, were aimed at determining the manner in which they would like the teaching of this school subject to be organized for them. During the visit to schools, the researchers had the opportunity to see how classes in the Serbian language were organized and to observe how students in junior and senior grades were thought. School principals and teachers were interviewed, while focus groups, which included parents from the school board, were set up.

During the fieldwork, the Presidents of the two municipalitieswere interviewed, as well as the President of the Albanian National Council.

Upon data collection, the data will be analysed, based on which recommendations will be made and the ways of improving the quality of teaching in this subject identified.

We are grateful to all the schools in Bujanovac, Presevo, Biljaca, Veliki Trnovac, Lucan, Muhovc, Miratovac, Nesalce, Oraovica, Rajince, Reljani, Cerevajka and Crnotince, as well as to school principals, teachers, students and parents for the excellent cooperation.

The development of the study is supported by the British Embassy the Office of the High Commissioner on National Minorities, the Presidents of the municipalities of Bujanovac and Presevo and by the President of the Albanian National National Council.
